Authors and Guests

Irit Amiel (Irena Librowicz) is a translator, poet and writer. She was born in Częstochowa in 1931. Both her parents died in Treblinka in 1942. Just before leaving Ghetto for the concentration camp, they managed to hide little Irena in the secure place. After war she emigrated to Palestine, later she settled in Israel, where she lives and works.

Dominika Akuszewska is a director of drama, performance and film.  She is the founder of Play Film Festival UK.

A.M. Bakalar was born and raised in Poland. She has lived in Germany, France, Italy and Canada before she moved to the UK in 2004. Madame Mephisto is her first novel and was among readers’ recommendations for the Guardian First Book Award. She is the first Polish woman to publish a novel in English since Poland joined EU in 2004. A.M. Bakalar lives with her partner, a drum and bass musician, in London. She is currently at work on her second novel.

Tim Beasley-Murray is Senior Lecturer in European Thought and Culture at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, UCL. He was born in the Congo. He studied Modern Languages (Czech, German and Russian) at Cambridge and, after a year at the ENS in Paris, joined SSEES in 1996 as Lecturer in Slovak Studies. His PhD was on conceptions of experience in Mikhail Bakhtin and Walter Benjamin. A revised version of this came out with Palgrave Macmillan in 2007 as Mikhail Bakhtin and Walter Benjamin: Experience and Form. He has published on aesthetics, literature and political theory. Currently he is working on a research project on conceptions of speech and silence in political philosophy.

Wioletta Grzegorzewska is poet and writer. Her poetry volumes include Wyobraźnia kontrolowana (Częstochowa 1998), Parantele (Częstochowa 2003), Orinoko (Tychy 2008) and Inne obroty (Toronto – Rzeszów 2010). Her poems have been published in the following literary journals: “Arterie”, “Arkusz”, “OFF_Press”, “Studium”, “Tygiel Kultury” and “Zeszyty Literackie”. She won the “Tyska Zima Poetycka” competition for the publication of a volume of post-debut poetry. Her poems have been translated into English. In 2006, she left Poland and moved to the UK, where she currently resides in the town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight. Her first novel will be published by Czarne Press in Poland in early 2014.

Maggie Humm is a Professor in the School of Arts and Digital Industries at the University of East London.

Genowefa Jakubowska-Fijałkowska was born 1946 in Mikolowo, Poland.  She is the author of five volumes of poetry – in 2010, she published the collection “and then your fever will pass”.  Press debut in 1972 in “Odra”. Between 1970-80 she published her work in leading literary Polish periodicals. 1994 saw the publication of her first volume of poetry “Life Sentence”. 1994-2006 saw publications in, among others, “Akcent”, “Fraza”, “Magazyn Kulturalny”, “Arkusz”, “Opcje”, “Arkadie”, “Topos”, “Śląsk”, “Twórczość”, “Kwartalnik Artystyczny”, “Zeszyty Literackie” and on-line. Radio Katowice adapted her poems for a series of radio plays. In 2006, she received the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage grant. Still residing in Mikolowo.

Agata Pyzik is a Polish journalist and writer living in London. She writes about art, architecture, music and literature for many British and Polish magazines. Her focus is art and politics from the “former East”, including the Cold War and modernism. She writes for, among others, The Guardian, Icon, Frieze, Afterall, the Wire and Sight & Sound. She’s preparing a book on the cultural “dreamlands” in the Eastern and Western Europe during the communist era for Zer0 Books.

Grażyna Plebanek is the author of “Illegal Liaisons” (Stork Press 2012), named “Best of 2012” by These Little Words. She also wrote “Girls from Portofino” (WAB 2005), as well as “Box of Stilettos” (2002, WAB 2006) and “A Girl Called Przystupa”. Her short stories have been published in the following anthologies: “Dziewczynskie bajki na dobranoc” (Girls’ good-night stories, AMEA 2008), “Zaraz wracam” (Back shortly, Centrum Kultury Zamek, 2008), “Projekt mezczyzna (Project Man, wydawnictwo Delikatesy, 2009), “Piatek, 2:45” (Friday, 2:45, Filar 2010) and “Whims” (Swiat Ksiazki 2012). Born in Warsaw, Plebanek has lived for five years in Stockholm and she now resides in Brussels. She is among a group of international artists whose portraits will be exhibited in Brussels Gare del’Ouest for the next 10 years. Link to her site here.
